What is naturopathy?
Naturopathy is a ‘natural’ approach to health care that recognises the body’s innate ability to heal itself.
The six basic pricipals of naturopathy
The concept that the body has the natural ability to heal itself, and the naturopath's role is to facilitate this natural process.
The natural lifeforce of the individual must be nurtured to help in healing. Therapies must promote total healing and anything that interferes with this avoided.
The underlying causes of the problem must be identified and treated in order to initiate and complete healing. The cause of the problem can be identified on physical, emotional and spiritual levels.
Conventional medicine tends to treat a specific malady, whereas naturopathy looks at the biger picture, going beyond the treatment of symptoms and treats the entire body, the spirit and the mind.
The naturopath's role extends beyond treatment to educating the patient and to encourage them to take responsibility for their own health. This co-operative relationship between patient and practitioner is central to the healing program.
The ultmate goal of the naturopathic practitioner is that of prevention. The emphasis is on building and maintaining better health, rather than treating illhealth.
